The German State Railways (DR) in the German Democratic Republic were still depending on their 01 series express locomotives. However, many engines had been ran down in heavy passenger services. On top of this the limits of the old boilers became more and more apparent. Because of these circumstances it was decided to have 35 engines rebuilt in the Meiningen maintenance shops between 1962 and 1965 as part of a general reconstruction program - which resulted in the 01.5 series. Right until the end of the east german steam era these impressive locos did share the main burden of the DR heavy express services. Engine number 01 512 was the last one that was put aside by the Magdeburg depot in 1982. Nowadays a total of five preserved locos will keep the memory of the Reko-01 alive.
